Though some people claim this holiday was created to sell greeting cards, it was first declared in four hundred A.D by Pope Gelasius. It wasn’t until the Middle Ages, however, that Valentine’s Day became associated with Courtly Love. Today our celebration is closer to the 18th Century, English version, when folks began to exchange flowers, notes and candy. Though we say “I love you” in many different ways it’s still the thought that matters most.
Approximately every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. This means that over 41,000 donations are required to meet that daily need. On National Organ Donor Day we also recognize the one hundred and 20,000 Americans now waiting for life-saving organs. While not everyone can donate at this level, many can and do give blood. And for their sacrifice, we thank them!
