Transcript for March 1st

Welcome to March 1st, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate a potent potion and pork popularity.  More after the break from with Anna Devere.

Leave it to the French to create elegance from simplicity.  The word “compote” means mixture and with a few fruits cooked in water, sugar and some spice “Voila!” a delicious dessert emerges.  Originally served in the 17th Century for its health benefits, the short list of ingredients made this fruit dessert popular among those who love all things thrifty.  On National Fruit Compote Day you can raise the bar with some whipped cream or liqueur and a fine French accent for extra joie de vivre.

And for those who love to elevate the lowly to the sublime National Pig Day restores the humble swine to its proper star-status.  Though famous pigs such as E.B. White’s Wilbur and Winnie the Pooh’s Piglet need no introduction, it is worth noting that pigs possess an above average intelligence in the animal kingdom and have been memorialized as far back as 1772 with the Learned Pig of Dublin.  This famous porker could apparently count, tell time and entertain street crowds with his mad skills. On National Pig Day, join the parties, parades and people who go hog wild for this celebration!
