Transcript for March 3rd

Welcome to March 3rd on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate the essence of home, in how it was won and how it abides.  More after the break with Anna Devere.

The United States won its independence in 1776, but did you know that the British tried to take “its colonies” back? During the War of 1812, the crucial battle at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry, became a deafening scene of destruction as the British navy volleyed bombs for nearly 25 hours. On the quiet morning that followed, the sight of our tattered flag, still aloft in the smoke filled sky endures to this day a symbol of our relief that our nation stood sovereign and our sacrifices were not in vain.  On National Anthem Day, celebrate “The Star Spangled Banner” penned by Francis Scott Key; an emblem of our freedom that we all know by heart.

When you make soup, does it seem like enough to feed an army? If you find yourself with more than enough, consider the folks who would appreciate a bowl of comfort, and share the best cure for a blustery day. Whether it’s chicken noodle, split pea, or chowder, National Soup It Forward Day is the perfect way to make everyone in need feel like family.
